Erin Lupton’s ‘White Space’ attempts to underline the importance of negative space in design. By deconstructing words and arranging individual letterforms around the page, this spread draws draw attention to the underlying structure of the layout. Similarly, the ‘Designing design’ spread also aimed to create visual interest by using type as image. In this article, the author draws attention to humanities’ relentless pursuit of technological advancement. To reflect the idea that we are missing out on some of technology’s benefits in this process, parts of the headline type have been bled off the page.
